West Midlands PCC Bob Jones said the plans for the trial had been in place long before the latest calls for cameras were made following the “Plebgate” affair involving Sutton Coldfield MP, Andrew Mitchell.
Mr Jones said: “Well before David Davis MP made his call for the police to use body worn cameras, tests of these have been under way in the west of Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
“We are taking a staged approach, which helps us understand the operational, legal and technical issues arising from their use.
“This is the right way to research whether the cameras will help the police offer a better service to the public, and whether they support more effective policing and crime reduction.
